The VFW is committed to promoting patriotism and investing in future generations. If you are a high school student who loves democracy and is interested in a $30,000 college scholarship or a middle school student seeking a chance to win $5,000, these scholarships might be right for you.
The VFW Voice of Democracy audio-essay program, established in 1947, offers high school students a unique opportunity to express their views on democratic and patriotic themes through recorded essays. Each year, nearly 25,000 ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth graders from across the United States participate for a chance to win a share of over $1.3 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program.
The national first-place winner receives a scholarship of $35,000, which is paid directly to the recipient's American university, college, or vocational/technical school. Additionally, a range of other national scholarships are available, ranging from $1,000 to $21,000. The first-place winner from each VFW Department (state) is guaranteed at least a scholarship of $1,000.
The VFW recognizes outstanding middle school students each year through the Patriot's Pen essay contest. Nearly 70,000 students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades participate each year for a chance to win a share of more than $1.4 million in state and national awards.
First-place winners at the state level receive a minimum of $500, while the national first-place winner will obtain $5,000! This essay contest encourages young minds to explore America's history and reflect on their experiences in contemporary American society. Participants must write a 300 to 400-word essay that expresses their views on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief.
America's greatness is largely due to the sacrifices of our veterans. It is essential for our youth to learn about our rich history, traditions, and the vital role veterans have played in shaping our nation.
Each year, the VFW selects elementary, middle, and high school teachers to participate in the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Program.
Teachers who wish to be nominated must submit their entries to a local participating VFW Post by the deadline of October 31st.
